When an audio card is inserted in a digital camera, the LCD screen in recording and playback modes displays an item AI ("Audio") in addition to the items being displayed in the case of insertion of only a memory card. At this time, audio data can be recorded from the audio card with a press of a key switch (223). In a preference mode, an item AS ("Audio") is additionally displayed. By moving a cursor (CS), a user can select any of the items on display. When the cursor (CS) is placed at the item ("Audio") and a key switch (221) is pressed, a list of items for the sampling rate (CD or radio audio quality) is displayed, from which a user can select and set a desired sampling rate. After selection of the sampling rate, the digital camera returns to the recording mode, in which mode attendant audio data can be recorded while temporary images captured are displayed.
