[Also in Division B8] A thermoplastic tubular container is formed by introducing a thermoplastic tube 7 into a metal collar 5 having a cutting edge 6 and forcing the tube and collar down on to a molten sheet or ribbon 8 of plastics, e.g. polyethylene, thereby cutting out a disc end 10 and forcing it up within the tube to which it is welded by reason of the latent heat in the disc. The sheet 8 lies on a steel plate 9, which may, alternatively, be of laminated plastics. To ensure that the disc 10 remains flat a mandrel 13, or air under pressure is used inside the tube. In a modification. Fig. 3, a reciprocable mandrel 16 and mould 14 may form the welded end to a required shape before the disc 10 cools. Again, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), a hollow mandrel may support the inner wall of the tube and within this mandrel a spring-loaded inner mandrel reciprocates to form the container; in this embodiment the invention is applied to forming the upper end of a container having a screw-threaded neck. The stages of making the container may be carried out at successive stations, using a rotary table or conveyer. |
