Hydroperoxides of monoethylenically unsaturated aliphatic and alicyclic hydrocarbons are produced by contacting the hydrocarbon with molecular oxygen, in the liquid phase and in the presence of at least 1% by weight of the hydrocarbon of at least one metal oxide, the metal being from Group 1B, 2B, or 4 to 8 of the Mendele</>aef Periodic Table. The amount of oxide may be up to 50% by weight. The oxygen may be used in the form of air and the reaction temperature from 0 DEG to 150 DEG C. The molecular ratio of hydroperoxide to hydrocarbon in the liquid phase is maintained at less than 0.30. The mono-olefins preferably contain at least 4 carbon atoms in the molecule, and may be substituted by radicals stable against oxidation , e.g. phenyl The oxides may be regenerated, e.g. by heating in the presence of air. |
