<p>Antibacterial bipyridylium salts Masses having antibacterial activity and which are useful e.g. as antiseptics for throat infections, as wound germicides or as antiseptics or disinfectants for non-medical purposes consist of a cpd. of formula (I) (where R1 and R2 are 7-14 C alkyl or alkenyl and (A1.A2)2- signifies two monoanions or one dianion) in admixture with an inert diluent or carrier. Cpds. (I) in which R1 and R2 are not both n-octyl, n-nonyl or n-dodecyl are new cpds. which are claimed per se and may be prepd. by appropriately quaternizing 4,4'-bipyridyl, by coupling 2-molecules of a 1-R1- pyridinium salt in the presence of Na amalgam and oxidizing the coupling product, or by reductively coupling a 1-R1-pyridinium salt in the presence of NaCN or KCN and oxidizing the coupling product.</p> |
