Apparatus and process for making open-mouthed pouches comprises a pair of webs 14 and 15 fed incrementally from reels 12 and 13 through associated web tensioners 30 and 31 which apply a desired tension to each web which are then passed through alignment sensor means 40 to line up the edges. The two overlapping webs are then delivered to the sealing station 22 where a heated die 45 is pressed against resilient mat 47 supported by anvil 46 to form seams along the edges. The mat may be silicone. The pouches may then be parted from the web by trimming means 50. The tensioner may comprise a plurality of fixed and moveable rollers 32 and 33 setting out a tortuous path for the web. The die may be detachable by quick release fasteners. A web cleaner 26 and 27 may also be provided.
