PURPOSE: A liquid crystal medium based on a negative dielectric anisotropic polar compound and an electro-optical display device using the medium are provided, to improve the resistance against the moisture, heat, light and direct and alternative electric field, to reduce the rotation viscosity and to increase the optical anisotropy (Delta n). CONSTITUTION: The liquid crystal medium comprises at least one compound represented by the formula 1, wherein R11 is an alkyl group of C1-C12 or an alkenyl group of C2-C12; and R12 is an alkenyl group of C2-C12. Optionally the liquid crystal medium comprises further at least one compound represented by the formula 2 and/or at least one compound represented by the formula 3, wherein Z21 is -COO- or a single bond; A21 is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; m is 1 or 2; and R21, R22, R31 and R32 are independently an alkyl or alkenyl group of C12 or less (wherein at least one non-adjacent CH2 group can be replaced by -O-, -S- and/or C-C triple bond). |
