<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new production method for optically active 3-hydroxy-γ- butyrolactones which is short in production process, excellent in cost effectiveness and efficiency and industrially suitable by using raw materials, which are easily available at a low cost, and easy-to-handle reagents. SOLUTION: Characteristically, an optically active 3-hydroxy-γ-buryrolactone represented by formula (1) (wherein, * represents asymmetric carbon atom) is produced by hydrogenating a 4-substituted oxy-3-hydroxybutyric acid ester represented by formula (2) (wherein, R<1> is a 1-4C lower alkyl, R<2> is a protective group for hydroxyl group which is deprotected by the hydrogenation conducted with a heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst and * is as defined above) in the presence of the heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst and acidic substance to close the ring concurrently with the deprotection.</p> |
