PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type color display device of a color scroll system which is capable of removing a color break without increasing the moving speed of a color band on a light valve. SOLUTION: This color display device has a white light source, an optical system, a luminous flux separating element 3 which separates the white light past the optical system to respective color luminous fluxes of three primary colors and diffracts these luminous fluxes respectively in prescribed directions, a microlens array and the light valve. The luminous flux separating element 3 is formed by laminating laminated driving type hologram elements 3r, 3g and 3b which can change the diffraction differences by each of the respective color luminous fluxes of the three primary colors. The laminated driving type hologram elements 3r, 3g and 3b by each of the respective colors are formed to have luminous flux separating element control sections for color scrolling the respective color luminous fluxes of the three primary colors to a pixel unit within one unit frame with the three adjacent pixels as one unit frame. |
