PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image extracting method capable of efficiently extracting a target image (e.g. face) of an optional size included in a given image. SOLUTION: An image extracting device prepares reduced images hierarchized stepwise by a reduction ratio with respect to an inputted image. A face is searched by comparing a search area of a reduced image (a) of the highest order hierarchy 1 in which a ratio that the area of a reference image occupies is the largest (reduction ratio is the largest) among the hierarchized reduced images with the reference image. If an area 11 is extracted as a face within the search area of the hierarchy 1 (a), the area 11 of the (a) is magnified in accordance with the ratio of the reduction ratio between the hierarchy 1 and the next hierarchy 2 to be an area 12 of the next hierarchy 2 (b). An area except the area 12 is set as a search area of the hierarchy 2. Afterwards, a face area extracted in each hierarchy is magnified in accordance with a reduction ratio from the highest order to the lowest order hierarchy and search is repeated while cumulatively excluded. |
