PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device which is reduced in color unevenness of projected images. SOLUTION: The phase advance axes of quarter-wave phase plates 105B and 105R are arranged approximately parallel to the prescribed axes within reflection type light valve surfaces 106B and 106R corresponding to the prescribed axis within the plane of a projection screen each other in first light valve groups 106B and 106R. The phase advance axis of a quarter-wave phase plate 105G is arranged approximately perpendicularly to the prescribed axis within the reflection type light valve 106G surface corresponding to the prescribed axis within the plane of the projection screen each other in a second light valve groups 106G.
