PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an EC display device which is excellent in responsiveness, color developability, memory characteristics, etc., lessens exuding and is capable of displaying high-fineness and high-density images with a good preservable property. SOLUTION: This display device has at least a medium containing at least one kind of compound to develop or erase colors by at least either of electrochemical oxidation reaction and reduction reaction between a pair of electrodes and a supporting electrolyte and controls image formation by heating this medium, and the compound does not melt at the temperature while the image is not formed, and melts only at the temperature during the image formation, so as to be able to develope or erase the colors in a visually recognizable manner. In the embodiment, the melting point of the compound is preferably 40 to 200 deg.C.
