PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease dispersion in the electron emission characteristic of a multi-electron source having surface-conduction election emitting elements arranged in a form of a matrix. SOLUTION: A characteristic measuring means and a characteristic shift means are provided. Based on electron emission characteristic values obtained by a characteristic measuring means, electron emission characteristic values depending on voltages applied to the anode are estimated. Next, a target electron emission value for the voltage applied to the anode at image display is set, the amount of shift of the electron emission characteristic under the driving condition on the shifted characteristic of each device is set, and adjustment of the driving is performed.
