898,986. Degassing metals. RUHRSTAHL A.G. March 23, 1960 [March 24, 1959], No. 10322/60. Class 72. A method for refining molten metal, for example steel, contained in a vessel 4 comprises the use of a hood 2 mounted above the molten metal and having a bottom portion 1 of inverted funnel shape dipping into the molten metal, the interior of the hood being maintained under vacuum or reduced pressure such as by a vacuum pump connected to the pipe 5. During refining a gas or mixture of gases, e.g. hot CO 2 , partially burnt CO, halogens or their compounds, or inert gases such as argon, are blown into the molten metal, either at a level above the vessel base, such as through a lance 3, or at or near the vessel base, such as through a permeable refractory nozzle, plate 8; or both means may be used blowing the same or a different gas through the molten metal, as illustrated in the figure which further shows a combustion chamber 9 for producing very hot CO 2 by burning CO gas in air supplied through pipe 10 and junction 11 respectively. |
