Apparatus for making helically seamed pipes of different diameters from flat metal strip comprising a concave forming tool the position of which is adjustable relative to the feeding direction of the strip toward the tool and means for feeding the strip against the forming tool near the inlet edge thereof and along the tool to the outlet edge to bend the strip continuously into a helical shape, is characterized in that the tool comprises an elastically deformable plate having inlet and outlet edges and is adapted to be bent to different concave shapes between one position in which the plate is bent so as to have a minimum radius of curvature and a maximum sector angle between the edges and another position in which it is bent to a maximum radius and a minimum sector angle. Strip 1 is fed by feed rollers 1 through a guide channel 2 to a concave elastically deformable forming tool 3. The tool may subtend an angle of 180 degrees with its inlet and outlet edges 4, 5 in the same vertical plane or one of the edges may be moved in the direction of the strip feed to subtend an angle of 90 degrees.
