PURPOSE: Provided is β-galactosidase gene which is characteristically isolated from Bifidobacterium adolescentis, particularly Bifidobacterium adolescentis Int57, and used as a selection marker for foods. Also, provided are a recombinant vector inserted with the gene and a transformant transformed with the vector. CONSTITUTION: The β-galactosidase gene characteristically isolated from Bifidobacterium adolescentis Int57 has the amino acid sequence of the SEQ ID NO:1. The recombinant vector, pBIG, includes the β-galactosidase gene. The transformant is transformed with the recombinant vector, pBIG.
