PURPOSE: A method and apparatus for hemming a button shank portion is provided to prevent the disentanglement of a hemming thread since the hemming thread is tied as an elliptical portion is caught in the shank portion. CONSTITUTION: A hemming thread is taken up to a shank portion of a button by at least one revolution, with the hemming thread being supported in an elliptical shape from the shank portion of the button. Then, the hemming thread portion of the elliptical shape is caught in the shank portion. Finally, when the hemming thread is pulled, a firm knot is formed on the hemming thread. The hemming apparatus to which the method is adapted, includes; a base; a unit arranged on the base for supporting a bobbin(210); a unit for holding a button; a unit(400) for hemming the thread to a shank portion of the button held by the button holding unit; a unit(500) for driving the hemming unit(400) and the bobbin(210).
