The invention can be used for a hydraulic damper in which the resistance force occurred during a linear motion of a piston in a working cylinder (during the compression stroke of the damper) is regulated by modifying throats of channels arranged on said piston. The aim of the invention is to extend the regulating range of the resistance force by modifying throats of channels arranged on the piston. The inventive method consists in connecting a compensation chamber to an extension chamber during the linear motion of the piston in the working cylinder. Said method can be carried out by means of the inventive device which opens or closes the channel connecting the compensation chamber to the extension chamber with the aid of a closing element which is moved by interacting with the rod, or a closing element which is moved by the pressure difference between the extension chamber and the compression chamber or by the pressure difference between the compensation chamber and the compression chamber.
