SYSTEM AND METHODS FOR DISTRIBUTING DISPLAY ADVERTISING AND MONITORING ADVERTISING EFFICACY

A system (10) for displaying advertisements (22) on a number of distributed display units (12) has a communication server (30) which forwards advertisements in the form of HTML pages (22A) together with a schedule (24) for displaying the advertisements to display controllers (16) in the display units (12). The display controllers (16) may be computers running standard web browser software (20F). Each advertisement (22) may have a unique identifier (22D). The identifier is preferably a URL of an associated web page (56). Display units (16) may also have touch screens or other associated user input devices (20H). The efficacy of individual advertisements (22) can be monitored by logging and analysing hits on the associated web page (56) or input from user input devices (20H) associated with the display units (16) or input derived from Point of Sale tracking mechanisms (60). Display units (12) can be widely geographically distributed. The display communication server (30) may communicate with some of the display units by way of satellite telecommunication links (32A) and other display units by way of the Internet (44).
