NEUROLOGICAL BILATERAL TRAINER

A system and method for neurological testing. The system comprises an electrocardiograph (ECG) recorder, and two plethysmographs (PG), one recording a left PG signal, the other recording a right PG signal. The left and right PG signals being recorded from symmetrically opposite locations on the body of a subject, such as left and right forefingers. A processor analyzes the outputs from the ECG and the PGs. The processor detects a predetermined feature in a heartbeat of an ECG such as the R peak, and determines a time t0 at which the predetermined feature occurred. Then the processor detects a first pulse wave occurring after time t0 in the right PG signal and a first wave pulse occurring after time t0 in the left PG signal and determines the time t1 at which the first pulse wave in the right PG signal occurred and the time t2 at which the first pulse wave in the left PG signal occurred. The processor then calculates a left pulse transit time (PTTL) and a right pulse transit time (PTTR) and the difference between the two transit times (D) where PTTR; t1 - t0, PTT2< - t>0< and (D); PTT>R<-PTT>L<. The value of D is displayed on a screen to the subject, who then responds by controlling his autonomic outputs so as to bring the value of D to within a predetermined range.
