The hinge has two arms, one of which consists of two struts (16, 17) connected by a shear bolt (19) which breaks or shears off when a known load is exceeded, so that under a shock load, the hinge collapses and yields. This produces a two-stage time lag in the event of head impact, so that the risk of serious injury is greatly reduced.
