Safety sensor for a rail vehicle, especially for wheel safety has a wheel with a sensor (2) comprising an inner sensor ring and an outer piezo-ring arranged in a cut out within the wheel. An infrared diode (3) captures signals from the sensor. Imbalance in the wheel, caused for example, by fatigue, leads to vibration which deforms the piezo-ring crystal causing a change in a self generating magnetic field that is detected by the sensor ring, so that a signal is transmitted to a data capture device.
