Cyclohexanedial-1,4 is made by catalytic dehydrogenation of cyclohexane-1,4-dimethylol in the gaseous state at a temperature between 300 DEG and 600 DEG C. in the presence of oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas, e.g. air, and distilling the reaction mixture so obtained. The reaction may be effected at pressures below 100 mm. Hg, for example below 10 mm. Hg. Typical dehydrogenation catalysts may be used including copper, silver, zinc, brass alloys, Adkins catalysts based on copper-chromite with varying additions of zinc and/or nickel and/or barium, noble metals and oxides or compounds of metals of Groups V and VI of the Periodic System such as molybdenum, vanadium or titanium. Detailed examples are given. |
