This invention relates to the use of a mutant E2 polypeptide to induce apoptosis (a form of programmed cell death) in cells. The mutant E2 derived polypeptide is p53 binding deficient. Preferably it is unable to bind p53; o r able to bind p53 but unable to induce p53-dependent apoptosis.
