Focus jumping means (DSP (51)) is provided to effect focus jumping for moving the laser spot from one recording layer to another of a multilayer optical disk (10) having a plurality of recording layers depending on the recording/reproducing operation for recording data on the multilayer optical disk or reproducing recorded data from it. The focus jumping means conducts acceleration for moving an objective (34) installed in an optical pickup to move its focus from one recording layer to another of the multilayer optical disk, stands by, and deceleration for stopping the objective. During the acceleration, the impulse of an acceleration pulse applied to move the object is larger than that of a deceleration pulse to stop the objective. Thus, a stable focus jumping is realized.
