A coloring agent composition comprises a dispersed, difficultly water-soluble dye, water; a dispersant and a 1,2-diol, with some of the diols being novel compounds. A coloring agent composition comprises: (A) a dispersed, difficultly water-soluble dye; (B) water; (C) a dispersant; and (D) a 1,2-diol of formula (I) R<1> and R<2> = H, (CH2-CH2-O)n-H, (CH(CH3)-CH2-O)n-H or (CH2-CH2-O)a-(CH(CH3)-CH2-O)b-(CH2-CH2-O)c-(CH(CH3)-CH2-O)d-H; n = 1-8; a, b, c and d = 0-7, with a + b + c + d <= 9; R<3> = straight-chain 2-10C alkyl, 6-14C aryl (optionally substituted by 1-8C alkyl) or CH2-O-R<4>; and R<4> = 1-10C alkyl An Independent claim is also included for a novel 1,2-diols of formula (I: R<1> and R<2> = H and R<3> = optionally substituted 6-14C aryl or CH2-O-R<4> excluded) as above.
