The safety device has a seat contact switch (8) providing a signal when a driver is seated in the driving seat (7) and a sensor (18) incorporated in the seatbelt lock (17), for providing a signal upon insertion of the seatbelt clasp. Both signals are fed to a control,evaluating the time sequence of the signals, so that the vehicle can only be operated when the seatbelt is closed after the driver is seated.
