PURPOSE: An oil-free compressor is provided to secure reliability, efficiency, high power density and reduce the size and the cost of maintenance, and remove noise. CONSTITUTION: An oil-free compressor apparatus includes a housing(20); a shaft(12) mounted rotatably in the housing; a compressor(10) with compressor wheels(14) integrally combined to the shaft; an electric motor(18) with a rotor(16) integrally combined to the shaft to directly drive the compressor; and oil-free air or process fluid lubricated hydrodynamic foil bearings(26,28) for the shaft. The compressor is a cooling compressor. The motor is an induction motor. The compressor apparatus further includes a frequency converter to supply power to the motor with high frequency.
