[Also in Group XVII] Beverages, e.g. beer, containing carbon dioxide are fed through a heater 4 from a storage tank 1 directly to a counter-pressure filling machine 5 by a pump 3 which maintains the pressure in machine 5 at a value greater than the carbon dioxide saturation pressure corresponding to the filling temperature. The pressure is also ma ntained constant by a valve 10 in the pump outlet controlled by a member 9 responsive to the pressure in pipe 14 connecting the heater to machine 5. Hot bottles from a washing machine are first tested by hot high-pressure air in a machine 6 and are then filled with hot carbon dioxide in machine 7 before being fed to machine 5. After filling, hot carbon dioxide is passed into the head-space from pipe 8. Carbon dioxide vented from machine 5 during operation is recirculated to machine 7 and pipe 8. High pressure carbon dioxide flowing to machine 5 through pipe 20 is cut off by valve 16 if the pressure in liquid feed pipe 14 rises above a desired value. |
