An automatic labelling machine for applying adhesive tape or the like to packages 18 comprises a stationary supporting table 17, a circular applicator member 12 adapted to circulate about the package and carrying a roll of tape 21, a tape severing device 23 and two independently operable pressing apparatus 24, 25, one of which, 25, is associated with the leading portion and the other 24 associated with the trailing portion of the tape, the pressing apparatus 24, 25 being mounted on a carriage 32 movable below the package 18. In operation the tape extends from auxiliary rollers 22 to the reel 21 (Fig. 1) and the pressing apparatus 25 is used to apply the tape to the base of the package 18. In this position the carriage 32 is in the forward position so that the apparatus 25 is in the plane of the tape. The apparatus 25 consists of three bars 46 in triangular formation. A bolt 48 at one apex rests in a bed 49 in a block 50. A cam 51 at another apex passes through a slot 52 in the block and into a slot 53 in a rotary plate 54. The slot 52 consists of an arcuate portion and a straight portion so that when the plate 54 rotates the apparatus 25 is first rotated from position shown in dotted lines to a horizontal position and then moved inwardly toward the package. Thus the tape is first applied to the package and then ironed on. The apparatus 25 is then returned to its starting position and the platform retracted. The applicator member is rotated one revolution to the position shown in Fig. 1 to apply the tape over three sides of the package and back to the rolls 22. The platform 32 is moved forwardly and a cutting means 23 comprising a knife mounted on one end of a centrally pivoted lever with a cam engaging a guideway and a pivotal oneway stop on the other end is automatically operated by a compressed spring mounted below the knife to sever the tape. The pressing apparatus 24 then applies the tape in a similar manner to the apparatus 25. |
