An umbrella frame 13 comprises a notch 15, runner 17, ribs 16 and stretchers 19, one end of each rib being integral with and hinged to the notch and the opposite ends of each stretcher being integral with and hinged to the runner and to the ribs respectively. The frame to which a fabric or plastic cover 12 is secured is moulded in a plastic, e.g. polypropylene, in two parts, an upper spider 25 consisting of the notch and the ribs and a lower spider 26 having stretchers 19 radiating from a collar 18 on the runner, self-hinges 21, 22, 23 being provided in the moulding process by forming thinned, flattened portions in the ribs and stretchers which are of rectangular, square, round &c. cross-section. The two spiders are then joined at the self-hinge 22 by heat or heat and pressure. In modifications the ribs are arched and the frame is moulded in one piece. The invention is applicable to garden beach &c. umbrellas with or without handles. |
