The production of strongly basic anion exchange material, based on crosslinked vinyl aromatic polymers, comprises reacting weakly basic anion exchange material containing tertiary amine groups with ethylene oxide at 70-75 degrees C and pH 7-11. Preferably the pH is maintained at 7-11, preferably 8-10 by the constant addition of sulphuric acid.
