PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture a cast steel slab by continuous casting, by precisely grasping the shape of a crater end which fluctuates spatially and temporally in the width direction of the slab, and by constantly controlling to optimize the shape. SOLUTION: The continuous casting method comprises to find the shape of the crater end in the width direction of the slab 1 by detecting the position of the crater end of the slab 1 with a device 5 for detecting conditions of solidification and to control the flow of molten steel in a mold according to the difference between the found shape and the predetermined shape. Or, the method comprises to measure a temperature distribution of the mold with temperature-sensing elements installed on the mold and extrapolate activities of the molten steel in the mold based on the obtained temperature data, as well as to find the shape of the crater end in the width direction of the slab by detecting the position of the crater end with the device for detecting conditions of solidification, to compare the extrapolated flow activities of the molten steel in the mold with the found shape of the crater end, and to control the flow of the molten steel in the mold by use of predetermined correlation of the two elements so that the shape of the crater end may satisfy a predetermined dimensional standard.
