PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a product for identifying a modulator of P2X7 receptor activities, and to provide their use in the treatment of skeleton disorder. SOLUTION: This method comprises identifying therapeutic candidates for modulating bone mass and/or bone mineral density by screening compounds. A method for treating the skeletal disorder the decreased bone mass and/or bone mineral density to provided. The method is based upon the identification and use of agonists of the P2X7 receptor. The method for identifying the therapeutic candidate for increasing the bone mass and/or the bone mineral density by screening a compound comprises detecting the index of the P2X7 receptor activities by bringing the test compound into contact with the P2X7 receptor under the conditions which, in the presence of the compound, permits the binding of the P2X7 receptor to a P2X7 receptor ligand. The increase of the index indicates that the compound is the candidate for increasing the bone mass and/or the bone mineral density by interacting with the P2X7 in vivo.
