The microorganisms are immobilized on elastomeric polymer foam inside separate tubes secured to the reaction vessel via a cover. A bioreactor for oxidizing iron from its divalent state (Fe(II)) to its trivalent state (Fe(III)) comprises a reaction vessel, a support for immobilizing microorganisms used to carry out the oxidation process, components for allowing the reactor to be oxygenated, and components for providing a thermostat control of the reactor. The support is formed by independent units, comprising polyurethane foam or another elastomeric polymer foam, inside cylindrical tubes on an internal structure secured to the reaction vessel via a cover. The oxygenation and thermostat components are also on this structure.
