The invention concerns a brasque paste containing dry matter consisting of calcined anthracite particles and/or artificial graphite and/or coke and a carbon-containing binder derived essentially from coal tar, having a low proportion of genotoxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, the paste having a wettability or degree of adhesion to the cathode blocks and a degree of expansion ensuring proper sealing conditions of the reduction cell.
