PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a nickel positive electrode capable of reducing discharge reserve and obtaining a high active material utilization factor. SOLUTION: A layer made of cobalt hydroxide is formed on the surface of a positive active material particle. A positive electrode material is oxidized so that one part of cobalt hydroxide in the layer and one part of nickel hydroxide in a positive active material are oxidized, the positive electrode material is formed in phase, the paste is applied to a current collector to prepare a positive electrode body, the positive electrode body is arranged in an electrolyte together with a counter electrode, the positive electrode body and the counter electrode are charged, this charging process is composed of a first process and a second process, and in the first process, constant current charging is conducted at 40-80 deg.C to the specified potential in a range from -60 to 400 mV for a mercury oxide electrode, and in the second process, additional charging is conducted at 20-40 deg.C to 100-150% of the nickel hydroxide capacity in one electron reaction. |
