A laminated conveyer or driving belt comprises a base layer of material suitable for frictionally transferring the drive, and one or more layers of tension reinforcing members which are ribbons or tapes of tough and flexible synthetic plastic material, e.g. nylon or polyester, arranged in substantially side-by-side contact across the width of the belt in each layer as a series of laterally adjacent helical turns or strips extending along the length of the belt at a bias angle to the longitudinal axis thereof, the components of the whole structure being mutually bonded together by an adhesive. The bonding of the components may be assisted by perforating the ribbons and tapes. The ribbons &c. may be so shaped in cross-section and arranged that surfaces thereof which are of greater depth in cross-section than the thickness overlap between the laterally adjacent helical turns or strips in each layer to provide an increased area of bonding surface for the adhesive, e.g. the reinforcing members may have bevelled edges, or may be tapered or wedgeform. Bonding may be further improved by having stepped or cranked-form ribbons to provide mutually overlapping portions, or by using ribbons having a series of shallow ribs, grooves, or corrugations. The ribbons or tapes may be preformed from a plurality of cords or strands of synthetic plastic material, e.g. nylon, laid together and adhesively bonded in side-byside relationship. The ribbon members may be continuous in each layer, being wound helically, and the direction or sense of the bias angle of the helical turns is preferably substantially equal and opposite in alternate layers. Alternate layers of the ribbons &c. may be separated by layers of mesh fabric or layers of cords in which strands may extend longitudinally in the direction of the belt. The base layer may be leather, natural or synthetic rubber, synthetic plastic, or textile fabric. The adhesive may be nylon contained in an appropriate solvent. |
