PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the occurrence of waveform distortion due to periodic power fluctuation by compensating dispersion and nonlinear effect in an ultra- high rate transmission system in excess of 100 Gb/s without shortening a relay interval. SOLUTION: In the optical fiber transmission line where a phase conjugate unit is placed in the middle of the transmission line, an optical fiber 3 placed between optical amplifiers 2 comprises a plurality of fiber segments 31, 32, the dispersion in the fiber segments 31, 32 is selected in proportion to the optical power strength of an optical pulse to be propagated or the nonlinear coefficient of the fiber segments 31, 32 is selected to be proportional to the reciprocal of the optical power strength of the optical pulse to be propagated thereby bringing frequency causing instability to side band modulation to a higher frequency band than the signal band. As a result, waveform distortion due to periodic power fluctuations can be suppressed and the dispersion and the nonlinear effect of the fiber can completely be compensated at the same time. |
