PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of detecting a failure of a retaining brake of a motor drive apparatus which detects an abnormality of a retaining brake such as a failure, a wire breakage, or the like, and can prevent an operation defect such as a failure of a motor, the fall of an apparatus, or the like. SOLUTION: There are provided a means 4 which decides retaining/releasing a retaining brake 3 according to an operation state of a motor 2, a means 9 which outputs a signal necessary for retain/release of the retaining brake, a means 11 which outputs a retained/released state of a retaining brake circuit 10, a means 12 which inputs the outputted information to a motor drive apparatus 1, and a means 4 which decides an abnormality of the brake circuit according to the operation state of the motor and the state of the retaining brake circuit. While the motor is in operation, if the state of the retaining brake circuit inputted to the motor drive apparatus is the retained state, an alarm is raised 13 and the motor is stopped.
