PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine the kind of a recording medium where a data set should be recorded. SOLUTION: A data processing system comprises a magnetic disk pool 21 including a magnetic disk and a magnetic disk writer reader, a magnetic tape pool 22 including a magnetic tape and a magnetic tape writer reader, a host computer 20 which performs predetermined jobs for the data set and controls the writer readers, and a terminal device 26 which outputs storage area use request data. The terminal device 26 outputs the storage area use request data in which a use request quantity for the storage area is described. The host computer determines the kind of a recording medium where the data set should be recorded after the predetermined jobs are completed by the host computer according to the use request quantity described in the storage area use request data.
