PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new automatic fingerprint identification method for performing the one-to-one identification of a person by the method which reliably functions in a device of limited calculation ability. SOLUTION: In this method, three steps are executed. In a coarse alignment step 32, the fingerprint of an inspection object and a template are compared by using some reference points. In a fine alignment step 33, the best form change to match the fingerprint and the template is selected by using the detailed part of the matching fingerprint. In a matching step 34, the fingerprint of the inspection object and the known template are matched against one other, parameters are calculated from matching detailed parts and a final identification judgment is made by the parameter.
