Bin lifting and discharging gear attached to the rear apron 1 of a refuse collecting vehicle comprises a swingable bin lifting and gripping assembly 2 for a large capacity bin 3. A U. shaped lifting frame 9 with two cantilever arms 9a with rollers 10 is raised by an hydraulic ram 14, 15, Fig. 1 (not shown), to engage flanges 21 at each side 21<SP>1</SP> of the bin 3 to lift it from the ground (whereon it runs down the rollers 10 to engage buffers 12), to clamp it against a U- shaped gripping frame 4a having rubber strips 11 acting as buffers and seals. At this stage two hydraulic actuators 23, 24 pivoted at 25 to brackets 26 on the cantilever arms 9a and at 27 to a frame 28 with side panels 29 swing the assembly 2 upwards about a mainshaft 6. An upper dust shield 32 is attached to U-section rails 31 guided by rollers 30. A lower dust shield 33 consists of two panels, 33a rigidly attached to the upper dust shield 32 and 33b pivoted on hinges 34 and loaded by springs 36 mounted between points 35, 37 into a normally co-planar position with panel 33a. When arms 5 on the assembly 2 reach control arms 42 continued operation of the actuators 23, 24 rotates hinges 40 about the mainshaft 6, while the U- section rails 31 roll on the rollers 30. A spring- loaded hook 48 on the lower dust shield 33b engages a stirrup-like handle 20a on the lid 20 of the bin 3 so that as the bin is rotated into the position illustrated in Fig. 4 (not shown), the lid is opened and the contents of the bin drop into a trough 55 of a compacting device 56 of known type. If the actuators 23, 24 are single acting, restoring springs may initiate the return of the bin 3. If the actuators 23, 24 are double acting, such springs are not required.</p> |
