The surgical instrument has a tool (2) for receiving and/or breaking a foreign body into fragments. The tool (2) is arranged at or near the distal end of an elongate tool actuator element (1) arranged axially in a sleeve (7). The actuator element (1) and the tool (2) are formed from a tube having a lumen (6). At least the distal end of the lumen is open. The tool may be e.g. in the form of a basket or pincers.
