A carbon (C) material for production of activated C is a condensed polycyclic aromatic compound with at least one aliphatic hydrocarbon group bonded to a cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon condensed ring, the compound having specified 13C-NMR analysis signal intensity ratios. A carbon material for production of activated C for use in double-layer electrical capacitor electrodes is a condensed polycyclic aromatic compound with at least one aliphatic hydrocarbon group bonded to a cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon condensed ring, the compound having the following 13C-NMR analysis signal intensity ratios (IL/IR) /- 0.2 and (IC/IR) /- 0.14, where IR = aromatic signal intensity; IL = aliphatic hydrocarbon signal intensity; and IC = alicyclic hydrocarbon signal intensity. An Independent claim is also included for production of the activated C by carbonization and then alkaline activation of the condensed polycyclic aromatic compound.
