An adjustable pliers wrench (10) including a fixture (11) having a handle (1 2) and an opposing stationary jaw (13), a co-acting jaw (14) pivoted to the fixture (11) and a lever (16) pivoted to the co-acting jaw (14). A guide (25 ) is attached proximate the handle (12) and a locking element (24) is arranged on the guide (25) for reciprocal and canting movement. At least one attached biasing element (51) urges the locking element (24) toward the stationary ja w (13). An arm (21) is pivoted to the lever (16) and a cam (23) is pivoted to the arm (21) and to the locking element (24) so as to be movable between a first condition permitting the locking element (24) to reciprocate along the guide (25) and a second condition bearing against the guide (25) and canting the locking element (24) into frictional engagement against the guide (25).< /SDOAB>
