[Also in Division D1] A washing and spin-drying machine has a rotatable washing drum 21 divided into two or more clothes receiving pockets 22, 26 and provided with a single counterbalancing tank 20 at its periphery into which liquid, e.g. water, is injected whilst the drum is being rotated. A stationary chamber 10 housing drum 21 is mounted on a rockable platform 12 supported by a pivot 13 and a spring 14, the stem 2 of a valve 16 being coupled to the platform, as shown. A slightly greater weight of clothing is lodged in pocket 26 than in pocket 22, and the lack of balance when the drum is rotating actuates valve 16 to admit fluid to tank 20 through a pipe 18, a feed-ring 19 and a pipe 19a. A bleeder-opening 20a in the tank compensates for changes in the liquid content of the clothing. Drum 21 may be uncoupled from a drive mechanism by an electromagnetic clutch 30, an indicator 36 facilitating loading of the pockets with suitable weight proportions. The clutch may be disengaged, or a drive-motor (not shown) may be disconnected, when liquid is fed to tank 20. An excess of liquid in the tank may cause a second valve (not shown) in pipe 17 to close and the drum to coast whilst the liquid escapes through opening 20a. Tank 20 may comprise a plurality of compartments which may be inter-connected by pipes or passages (not shown). The valve 16 may alternatively be operated by a micro-switch 15 and a switch (not shown) may be provided to change the speed of the motor from low to high when partition 25 is horizontal.
