A process for the production of purified nitrocyclohexane comprises dissolving impure nitrocyclohexane in a liquid medium comprising liquid ammonia, allowing a substantial portion of the nitrocyclohexane to precipitate as the ammonium salt of aci-nitrocyclohexane, separating the precipitate and decomposing it to yield purified nitrocyclohexane. The liquid medium is preferably at a temperature of -30 to -40 DEG C. and 1/4 to 1 hour is allowed to elapse between dissolving the impure nitrocyclohexane and separating the ammonium salt.
