A cleaning device includes a cleaning member for cleaning a surface of an image bearing member while it is moving; holding means for holding the cleaning member; vibrating means which per se is vibratable; control means for controlling operation of the vibrating means; wherein the holding means is movable toward and away from the image bearing member; the vibrating means is held on the holding means; and the control means actuates the vibrating means upon stop of movement of the image bearing member.
