<p>A hydroxyalkylated polyhydric alcohol ether compound represented by the general formula (I) or (II), which is excellent in thickening effect and low-temperature stability and is useful as a thickener effective for the preparation of a liquid detergent. It can be produced by condensing a 1,2-epoxyalkane represented by the formula (III) with an aliphatic diol represented by the formula (IV). It is usable for producing a liquid detergent composition together with various surfactant detergents (excluding cationic ones), in particular, sulfurized anionic or amphoteric surfactants.
