The invention relates to a process and installation for enhancing the working life of the clay work of the steel-making converters. According to the invention, the process comprises discharging the steel made in a converter, bringing the converter in the vertical position, placing a lance at the lower limit of its stroke in the converter and blowing a pressurized neutral gas which dislodges and takes over the fluid scale retained by the converter and sprays it onto the walls of the converter, where the scale sticks and dries after a while, thereby forming a new wear layer. According to the invention, the installation for applying the process comprises some pressurized neutral gas tanks (1) provided with some safety valves (Ss) connected to some reducing pieces (R), to a reducing valve (2), wherefrom the gas is passed through a measurement diaphragm (3) reaching to a flow rate regulator (4) wherefrom it is directed through a quick-acting gate valve (5) in each converter.
